The second gained ten 2011 Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and Best Achievement in Directing for the Coen Brothers.
The Coens’ take on the classic Western stars Jeff Bridges as a hard drinking US Marshal, who is employed by a precocious and puritan 14 year-old (Hailee Steinfeld) to avenge the murder of her father by an outlaw (Josh Brolin, now a Coen’ fave following No Country for Old Men).
The Coens have curbed their tendency towards nihilism, as seen in No Country for Old Men and A Serious Man. By streamlining their traditional filmmaking frills, but still maintaining their high standard of craftsmanship, they’ve delivered a piercing meditation on the West that will resonate long in the heart.
Fans of western remake 3:10 to Yuma, as well as the Coens’ many devotees, will find much to appreciate here.

Did You Know...? Jeff Bridges was two years younger than John Wayne was when he portrayed the character of Rueben J. “Rooster” Cogburn in the original True Grit. Also, Jeff Bridges’s Oscar nomination for this film marks the fourth time in Oscar history that one actor has been nominated for playing a role that had already earned another actor an Oscar.
