Following the exhilarating escapades of Kick- Ass, director Matthew Vaughn is back in the superhero world, recreating the ground zero myth of the X-Men.

Pivotal to X-Men: First Class is the relationship between Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) and Eric Lehnsherr (Michael Fassbender), young mutant friends who would go on to be bitter enemies as Professor X and Magneto, leaders of opposing mutant factions – the X-Men and the Brotherhood.

It’s a credit to Vaughn and his three fellow writers that they’ve managed to concoct an origin story that’s not only coherent, but brimming with compelling concepts and characters. X-Men: First Class is a terrific prequel-cum- franchise reboot that will seed many more installments to come, and the retro setting within the Cuban Missile Crisis gives the film a look that’s distinct from the other X-Men adventures.

STARRING: James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender

Did You Know...? Taylor Lautner was considered to play Hank McCoy (aka Beast) but dropped out due to scheduling conflicts. Nicholas Hoult was later cast. Also, the film is based on the “X-Men” comics ‘Uncanny X-Men’ (1963) and ‘X-Men: First Class’ (2006).

#2. Josh Shanahan
A film that many critics have praised for its wonderful effects, acting and even storyline and as an xmen fan I was impressed with the effects and at times the acting and the way the writers connected the different characters together in a way not everyone would have guessed was intriguing at best, however as many fans may or may not know this entire film messes with the continuity of the others so we must ask which is more real in that world? Only one clear one is the way in which Xavier has lost the ability to use his legs at the end of the film which we know to be wrong in the continuity as himself and magneto are both walking towards Jean in a flashback in X-men: The Last Stand in which he is able to use his legs without any problems.

The reason the X-Men films (with the exception of the third movie The Last Stand) are among the best comic book adaptations is that they are played straight with a gravitas that belies the heroes outrageous superpowers. Anchoring them in the real world, and using the series as a springboard to explore issue of intolerance and prejudice, makes the mutants stand out from other spandex wearing superheroes. A terrific prequel and superbly cast, particularly Michael Fassbender's Magneto. Look out for a fun High Jackman cameo, too.
