Not only is Rowan Atkinson’s bumbling superspy back after eight years, but he quickly became a favourite with local moviegoers, turning the film into a surprise box office hit. Not bad for a character originally conceived for a credit card commercial.
This slapstick spy spoof does the right thing by going totally over the top with more Bond movie cliches than you can shake a martini at. Following his dismissal from MI7 after a botched operation that killed the President of Mozambique, Johnny English is called back into service to prevent the assassination of the Chinese leader by a secret society.
Globe-hopping between Tibet, Hong Kong and the UK, Johnny must also uncover the identity of a mole within the MI7 ranks.
The spirit of Mr. Bean is alive and well in Johnny English, and Atkinson’s slapstick antics make Austin Powers look like a professional.
A light and undemanding comedy romp for the whole family.
