In a year packed with comic book heroes, Thor stands out from the crowd. Blonde Aussie Chris Hemsworth (Star Trek) plays the eponymous hammer-wielding warrior, who falls to Earth from the mythical realm of Asgard.

Stripped of his powers, Thor must learn to live amongst the human race, enlisting the help of scientists Natalie Portman and Stellan Sarsgaard.

Meanwhile, back in Asgard, King Odin (Anthony Hopkins) has fallen into a coma and Thor’s bad brother Loki (Tom Hiddelston) has taken over as ruler. Loki intends to kill Thor and destroy the bridge between worlds.

More reminiscent of the Masters of the Universe movie (though definitely not as cheesy) than the likes of Iron Man, Kenneth Branagh directs Thor like he’s shooting Shakespeare, giving the superhero exploits a gravitas that’s missing from similar Marvel adaptations, but not at the expense of action and escapism.

Together with Iron Man and the upcoming Captain America, Thor is another hero set to return in 2012’s big comic book blockbuster The Avengers.

STARRING: Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Stellan Sarsgaard, Anthony Hopkins, Tom Hiddelston

Did You Know...? In 2005, Matthew Vaughn was going to direct this film, describing it as “the birth of a hero, interweaving Gladiator with Norse mythology.” He went on to direct the superhero films Kick-Ass and for Marvel, X-Men: First Class.

When my partner bought "Thor" on bluray, right up until he put the disc in the player, I assumed it wouldn't be my cup of tea. As he pressed play, I had all the intentions in the world of leaving him to it while I grabbed an hour or so of "me time". However, the graphically-rich opening scenes were intriguing enough for me to stay put on the couch, and before I knew it, I was drawn in right to the end. I even went to find out more about "the real" Thor later on, which to me is one good sign of a good movie. Regardless of whether or not the eye-candy (Hemsworth and Portman) was one of the bigger reasons for keeping our attention, we both enjoyed the afternoon watching this film, along with its unexpected ending!
