Game of the Month: Star Wars Force Unleashed

Game of the Month: Star Wars Force Unleashed

I have to admit, I love Star Wars. When my excited hands ripped open the finished product of SW: FU, I’d already given the review code a flogging, so I knew what I was in for.

SW: FU is a good game, not a great game. Fans of Star Wars will love its intricately woven storyline that bridges events from Episode III to IV.

The appearance of known characters from the films only helps to familiarise and create the full Star Wars experience. From the first frame there is no doubting that you are playing a Star Wars game.

There are moments of brilliance in FU that will have gamers marvelling at the impressive DMM and Euphoria technology.

Holding a thrashing Stormtrooper aloft with the Force Grip while you decide his fate gives you a bizarre sense of satisfaction, as does cooking a screaming Jawa with Force Lightning.

Visually, the game is a handsdown winner. The planet locations in FU are superbly designed. The art department have skillfully captured the environments from the Star Wars universe, both the new and the instantly recognisable.

The levels with locations taken from the films, though, are by far the best to play.

Played on the default setting, FU isn’t a difficult game. Each level can be briskly worked through to meet the Boss at the end.

The inevitable duel with the Jedi you have been sent to destroy is played out in both realtime, and annoyingly, in quick time that leaves the finishing move in the hands of a simple push of the button. These battles would have worked better if they had been fought entirely in realtime.

On the whole, fans of Star Wars will be the real winners here and will get the most out of SW: FU. There’s even a classic Star Wars plot twist in the game.
