Game of the Month: 2010 FIFA WORLD CUP SOUTH AFRICA

EA continue their footballing dominance with this sleek accompaniment to the sporting world’s greatest spectacle. Yes, the World Cup is here, and what better way to fill in the late night gaps between games than hammering out your own chances in the finals.

From the whistle you realise there are many incremental tweaks that set it apart from FIFA 10. A new and vibrant main menu unveils all the options from a quick kick-off, Captain your Country mode, to actively participating in an online World Cup.

Players can take their team of choice through the lengthy qualification process, or alternatively jump right into the last 32 teams to fight it out in the World Cup itself.

The game features all 199 teams that entered the original qualification process for the 2010 finals. On the pitch, the action is a good yard faster than FIFA 10, taking the urgency of decision making to new levels – there’s an element of the PES of old here.

Goalkeepers do what they are paid to do in FIFA World Cup and stay in goal instead of rushing up the field in those suicidal runs, as seen in FIFA 10.

The midfield play has been tightened, too. It is easier to make errors now when passing the ball around in these areas, and crosses become an essential part of the game if you want to put the ball into the back of the net.

Penalties have also been given an overhaul. Just like in a real life penalty, the developers have added an edge of unpredictability to the spot kick. If you want to survive the knockout stage, it’s certainly worth practising these before you embark on a campaign.

New integrated animation sequences featuring frustrated touchline managers and groups of fans conveying emotion relative to what’s happening on the pitch are a nice touch. 2010 FIFA World Cup is a pleasant surprise.

Although not far enough out to document visual noticeable advances in technology, it does provide a different gaming experience to FIFA 10.
