In early 1993, we first sat down with Super Mario Kart on the SNES. Four and a half years – plus innumerable pizzas and bevvies – later, we emerged into the sunlight, bloated, bleary-eyed and with bloody sore thumbs. But we had to; Mario Kart 64 had arrived!
There have been four other incarnations of Mario and friends go-karting it up since, but the succinctly titled Mario Kart 7 promises to top the lot.
All the features you know and love are present – naturally given a 3D going-over for those who dig that extra dimension – but there’s new stuff, too, notably the ability for your kart to do the hang-glider thang if you go all cliff-droppy-offy.
Not enough? How about driving under the sea? No more spinning out at the touch of water, especially if you customise your vehicle of choice wisely. Yippee, let’s-a-go!

You can also customise your race car with cool items including monster tyres and propellors. All the old favourite items to collect or avoid along the way are still there, like shells, mushrooms, and stars, plus new added items including fire flowers and the long awaited super leaf.
I think the game is most enjoyable when using multiplayer and battling it out with your friends. There's something funky about beating someone half way across the world in a balloon battle!
Overall, a great update on the classic.
