Following their Oscar-winning score for The Social Network, Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor and collaborator Atticus Ross spent 14 months mapping music for David Fincher’s next film – the most anticipated Hollywood adaptation in recent years.
Thankfully, it doesn’t let us down given the high stakes. Over 39 tracks, Reznor and Ross combine the playful and foreboding in an intricate, (almost) wordless narrative.
Guest Karen O wails on the piston-pumping, techno-industrial opening version of Led Zeppelin’s Immigrant Song. After that successful anomaly, things settle into a more traditional score, albeit with no sweeping orchestras. It’s as darkly twitchy and rooted in minimal electronics as their last outing.
There’s impressive range throughout: Pinned and Mounted ‘s vibrant thrum gives way to the ghostly degradation of Perihelion. Moody ambience anchors Hidden in Snow. The experience is opaque and unnerving, maintaining the required suspense of a thriller while proving strangely tranquil.
