Fuzzed ‘70s FM Gold raunch picks a fight with garage punk. No matter who wins, the sonic power will leave you breathless.
The evolution of this Ohio duo from loose bluesygroove to an accomplished beat machine with venom is poetic.
Produced by the ubiquitous Danger Mouse, and apparently channeling some of the fire behind The Clash and The Cramps (self confessed in a recent interview), The Black Keys seem to be effortlessly balancing on the heads of various genres as they crowd-stride towards that imaginary stage on a southern farm with no sound restrictions.
38 minutes of undiluted party rock with heart – bring a six-pack and join in.

I do totally love this record but I'm not sure I hear The Clash and The Cramps the way your reviewer does. These fellas have gone all silky smooth after years of roughing it. It's alll very well to harp on about how 'cred' they are in their analogue recording studio, there's no getting away from it, this is there most 'produced' thing in years. But so what / it's kicks mule-ass like a rattle snake on tequila. this is my summer record! Oh to be sinking a few cold cans on the hill at Meredith listening to these boys. Please, God? Ah well, one year! I also liked the other story you guys wrote about The Keys; that little guide to their other records was quite good, although I reckon Thickfreakness is still way better than Rubber Factory mysellf.
