[DVD, Blu-ray] Even dyed-in-the-wool music purists must now defer: Kylie Minogue is bona fide Australian music royalty, inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame by PM Julia Gillard (no doubt hoping the charisma would rub off).
Minogue’s live spectacular Aphrodite Les Folies was released on DVD prior to Christmas. The Blu-ray version of the show is the first 3D release on the format by an Australian artist. It’s also available as a triple-disc set: two CDs of live audio culled from a triumphant London performance, and DVD that wonderfully showcases her rather visually spectacular stage show.
Me? I will never be a Kylie Minogue fan: but I doff my hat to this utterly remarkable piece of live production; see the Greco- Roman sets, the choreography, the visuals; the staging – while utterly, self-consciously and happily camp – are frankly mindblowing. Minogue is in gregarious and stately form, serving up buckets of the Kylie she knows the crowd have come to see. And given the thoroughly OTT nature of the proceedings, it’s rather refreshing to see how down to earth Minogue can be.
Highlights include a tasteful cover of Eurythmics’ There Must Be an Angel, the anthemic Can’t Get You Out of My Head and a knockout performance of All the Lovers.
