Jim Keays

Time Has Come Today – originally a hit for The Chambers Brothers the year The Masters Apprentices unleashed their debut single – could be the story of Jim Keays’ career.

“I’ve been loved and put aside,”he sings,“and my soul has been psychedelicised.” It’s the centrepiece of this covers collection. Just as the song fades and you think it’s over, it kicks again.

Some lives do have a second act. Dirty, Dirty could have been a major embarrassment, with a ‘heritage’ act fronting a young band (including Davey Lane on guitar), singing songs of whiskey, wine and women, with braggadocio and bluster. “Do you, do you want my love, woman?” Keays demands, before later declaring, “If you want love, babe, come see me.”

Of course, you can’t really call Dirty, Dirty a comeback because Keays has never stopped making music. But it’s a resurrection to rank alongside Whispering Jack and Jimmy Little’s Messenger. This is a combination of genius A&R and a talent that’s never dimmed.

Producer Ted Lethborg (who also contributes bass) has given Keays what he’s always deserved – respect. Not just a bunch of covers, Dirty,Dirty is a great rock‘n’roll record. Jim Keays is a national treasure. And his time has come again.

Jim Keays - welcome back ! I used to see him at the Armadale Hotel in the 1980s when it was the Jim Keays' Band. Audiences were a bit thin back then - but with Dirty, Dirty Jim proves he's still got it - one of the country's great rockers
