“Tonight I’m gonna go out, get drunk and find someone to take me home/ No great expectations, anyone will do.” It’s a striking opening to Emma Russack’s debut album.
Sounds footloose and fancy-free, but this is an album that aches. A break-up record, it’s brutally honest. Tonight is a languid tale of longing. This is a girl on the rebound, who knows it’s going to take a long time to bounce back. “I’d rather have nothing,” Russack confesses, “than something that has gone.”
These are songs with a heavy heart. And they signal the arrival of a significant new songwriter.
