Two years after grubby San Diegoraised vocalist and patchouli sniffer Sumach Ecks hooked up with The Gaslamp Killer and Flying Lotus to craft his grit-scarred, tape-crackled, re-edit epic A Sufiand a Killer, the man better known as Gonjasufi is back.
This is a another purple cloud of static-heavy blues, arcane folk gestures and dense, heavy, analogue esotericism. Gloomier and stranger than its predecessor, mini-album MU.ZZ.LE mines deep shafts into smoggy ’60s/’70s dirge and slow-rattling breaks.
It’s an abyss worth entering. Stripping the creaking, croaking Gonjasufisound from its more melodic inklings, MU.ZZ.LE embraces a darker, starker visage.

WIth deeply distorted vocals that ultimately sound like a mash up of Marc Bolan with a pair of socks in his mouth or a submerged Hasil Adkins, it is difficult to discern that this is the man who released "A Sufi and a Killer" back in 2010...an album critics described as a 'stunning, genre-transcending record'. Maybe what Sumach Ecks is trying to do here is to tweak his genre bending ways into oblivion. Who knows? All I can be sure of after listening to this is that a possible title change from 'MU.ZZ.LE' to 'MU.FF.LE(d)' would have been far more fitting.
