Cathedral

Doom metal is the genre’s dark horse. The often painfully slow approach and morose lyrics have never attracted wider appeal despite the fact that Black Sabbath – the world’s first heavy metaller – were also the original doom metal band.

Like Sabbath before them, Cathedral hail from England, but took the template further, adding extreme vocals and a dirge-like, almost funereal approach to their songwriting. At a time when metal was upping the ante on speed, and grind ruled the roost (vocalist Lee Dorrain was a former member of Napalm Death), Cathedral’s approach was revolutionary.

After 23 years, Cathedral are calling it a day. The band have a final album titled The Last Spire in the works, but have also seen fit to release their first live album, Anniversary. Disc one features a performance of their debut Forest of Equilibrium in its entirety, by the original line-up, while disc two features the current line-up storming through Cathedral’s most well-known numbers.

Doom metal is an acquired taste, but Anniversary proves that the style has a depth and rawness to it that is unique and so utterly metal.
