Hayden Christensen (aka Anakin Skywalker in Star Wars Eps I–III) plays an ordinary kid who possesses an extraordinary power – the ability to instantaneously teleport himself to any location in the world. At first he uses his gift for crime and fun, “jumping” into bank vaults to fund a life of luxury, but when he learns of the existence of a shady organisation hellbent on his destruction (known as Paladins and headed by a snowy-haired Samuel L. Jackson), his ability becomes crucial to his survival. Moreover, he discovers that he is not the only one with this talent after he’s forced to enter into an uneasy alliance with a British jumper, Jamie Bell (King Kong), who has declared war on the Paladins. It’s a great concept with some cool special effects and thrilling set pieces, as orchestrated by action specialist Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity, Mr. & Mrs Smith) who doesn’t let little things like plot, logic and characterisation get in the way of this visual rollercoaster ride. Co-written for the screen by genre veteran David S. Goyer (Blade, Batman Begins), Jumper is based on a series of novels by SF author Steven Gould and a sequel has recently been announced. Turn to page 4 for an insight into Samuel L. Jackson’s Paladin villain from the man himself.
