After 16 years and a hat-full of poor derivative sequels, Atari has resurrected the series. Alone in the Dark, the original horror survival title, is back with a contemporary re-imagining. Transporting the action from the 1920s to the present day, the premise revolves around mysterious happenings within and beneath the famous Manhattan landmark, Central Park. AITD features a unique episodic game format. As each stage is completed, the third-person action-adventure concludes with a cliffhanger before launching into the next level. This is an ambitious game that actually delivers on in its delusions of grandeur. The huge gameplay area is totally free-roaming, enabling extensive exploration options. There are many creative implementations in the game, one of which is the inventory interface. It allows your equipment, such as weapons, to be listed inside the lining of your jacket. Combat relies on an equal amount of intuition. Pull a bottle of petrol and some sticky tape from your jacket. Attach the tape to the bottle and toss it at the enemy so it sticks to them. Then light the trail of fuel and voila, watch them go up like the Hindenburg. Fire will play a integral part in the game, both as a weapon and an aid. Be prepared.
